Fire destroys warehouse at closed Joliet prison

JOLIET — A long-closed state prison in Joliet that's been featured in TV shows and movies was damaged overnight in a fire.

Tom Shaer is the director of communications for the Illinois Department of Corrections. He says the fire at the Joliet prison began around 3:15 a.m. Thursday and is now extinguished.

The blaze was contained to a warehouse, which was destroyed, but caused no other major damage.

The prison was featured in "The Blues Brothers" and other movies and is used by military special forces for training. It was built in 1853 and closed in 2002.

Shaer says no one was using it at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The state fire marshal is investigating, since there was no electricity at the time of the fire.
