Navy Veteran Joe Scholpp of Woodstock walks by a statue of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s V-J day image from 1945 where an American sailor is kissing a young woman in Times Square. Scholpp served in the Navy from 1973-1977. The statue will be outside of the McHenry Walgreens until Aug. 10 when it will be moved to Veterans Memorial Park in observance of “Keep The Spirit of ’45 Alive” day.

McHENRY – McHenry’s observance of “Keep The Spirit of ’45 Alive” day will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 11 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Congress has designated the second Sunday of August as a national day of remembrance honoring all members of “The Greatest Generation” and the end of World War II.

McHenry’s events the past three years have gained national recognition for the city and the Combined Veterans Organization.

This year’s celebration will honor veteran and nonveteran couples married in and before 1953. Couples who would like to participate should call 815-482-2070 for information.

The program will consist of honor guards, a rifle salute and taps played by at least 18 buglers, as well as a release of 30 white doves. World War II veterans will be honored guests with reserved seating in front of the gazebo.

The Lakes Area Swing Band, an 18-piece 1940s-style swing band led by Holly Frederichs, will perform a 1940s radio broadcast with guest Lou Rugani of WLIP-AM 1050. A dance floor will be open.

Veterans Memorial Park is at Park and Pearl streets, one block west of the Fox River and one block north of Route 20 (Elm Street).

For information, call 815-482-2070.
