CHICAGO (AP) — Two Chicago-area men whose alleged failed attempt to rob a small-town bank in northern Illinois left an accomplice dead have pleaded not guilty in federal court in Chicago.

Tuesday's arraignment was for 34-year-old Roberto Favela of Chicago and 40-year-old Aaron Russell of Orland Hills. It comes a week after their indictment on attempted bank robbery and other charges.

They were arrested on May 10 outside the Associated Bank branch in Richmond after FBI agents who'd been tracking them surrounded their vehicle.

But authorities say 45-year-old Tony Starnes of Chicago was shot dead by an officer as he tried to flee.

MiAngel Cody is a federal defender who represented Favela and Russell at an initial hearing following their arrest. He didn't immediately return a message Monday seeking comment.
