Metra board member from Chicago resigns

CHICAGO – Another member of the scandal-tarnished Metra board has resigned.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Friday that Larry Huggins would resign from the board. The mayor said he spoke with Huggins and they both agreed he would step down. Emanuel says Huggins' decision "will allow the agency to begin a new chapter." Huggins' departure comes a day after Metra board chairman Brad O'Halloran resigned.

Huggins says it is time for him "to step aside and allow Metra to move on."

The board has faced criticism in the wake of the $718,000 buyout of the commuter rail agency's former CEO Alex Clifford. Clifford claims he was pushed out for resisting pressure on hiring and salary issues from Illinois politicians, including House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Huggins is the fourth Metra board member to resign.
