McHENRY – The public is invited to celebrate patriotism and boost area veterans’ causes during Patriots in the Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at Veterans Memorial Park, Pearl and Court streets.
“This is a way for us to give back and show the veterans they are supported, and for the community to learn more about the veterans,” said Marianne Ruiz, president and founder of Joe’s Wish.
Joe’s Wish is a McHenry-based nonprofit organization that connects with and supports the needs of servicemen and women and their families, educates the public regarding military families’ needs, and grants wishes to active and retired military and their families.
Proceeds from Patriots in the Park will go toward the organization’s Heroes in Need fund and toward sending children of fallen heroes to camp, Ruiz said.
Among Joe’s Wish’s efforts to date are providing the funds for needed dental work for a veteran, providing educational funding for a single mother who had served, and fulfilling the Christmas wish lists of veterans at a transitional living facility.
Patriots in the Park will feature veterans organizations, crafter and vendor booths, a two-tiered bags tournament, a bounce house, low-cost and no-cost games for kids, food, beverages, raffles, a fundraising “brig,” a pie walk and more.
Star 105.5 will be at the park from 10 a.m. to noon. After that, live musical performances by Wild Rose, Practice in Public and Blindspot are scheduled. Local police and fire departments will make presentations, and an “In Loving Memory” balloon release with the playing of taps is planned.
