ROCKFORD – A Rockford woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the 2011 death of her week-old daughter.
Tina Lamonica had been charged with first-degree murder for the death of Gia, who was premature when she was born.
Medical officials say the infant died from complications from her mother's cocaine use.
Lamonica pleaded guilty Tuesday as part of a deal with prosecutors, although the proceedings were briefly delayed when she collapsed in a courtroom.
She was charged after authorities say the 38-year-old disregarded doctors' orders to remain in the hospital because her drug addiction led to a high-risk pregnancy. She gave birth several days after she checked herself out of the hospital.
She'll be sentenced in September and faces up to 14 years in prison.
