Bully pulpit

To the Editor:

Where does Gov. Pat Quinn get off using his office to beat down the most vulnerable of our society?

I’m speaking of our soon-to-be penniless legislators. The summer recess runs from the end of June until the end of October. The inhumanity of this governor to cut off salaries and stipends during vacation time.

I can’t help but think about the unfortunate legislators who weren’t able to put together a summer fact-finding tour at taxpayers’ expense. Something like a trip to the south of France to see how tan lines affect tooth decay. The thought that some of our elected officials might have to spend their summer at the municipal pool rather than Belize makes my good eye weep.

Thank God for John Cullerton and Michael Madigan, champions of the downtrodden, stepping in to spend taxpayer money to right this wrong. They’re taking the governor to the mat through a lawsuit to ensure our lawmakers can feed their families. I applaud the effort because lobbyists are hard to find during summer break.

If I could make a suggestion: turn the Rotunda into a soup kitchen to tide our legislators over. How can anyone expect our representatives to deal with the pension issue on empty stomachs?
