Former Crystal Lake Central tennis standout Nelle Youel dropped her first-round match in the U.S. Open National Playoff on Friday in New Haven, Conn.

Youell, who plays at Northern Illinois, lost in three sets to New England sectional champion, Meghan Kelley, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Youel advanced to the event at Yale University earlier this summer after winning the Midwest sectional of the competition. The winner of the national playoffs advances to the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament for a chance to play in the U.S. Open, both in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Former Prairie Ridge player and boys varsity coach Sam Sweeney will play in the mixed doubles portion of the national playoffs next weekend in New Haven.
