Officials: Tips make roads safer for trucks, cars

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois transportation officials are reminding motorists that big trucks need more time and space to maneuver on highways, and giving them wide berth will make roads safer.

Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider and officials from the Illinois State Police and Illinois Trucking Association gave tips for relieving roadway stress around trucks while visiting the Illinois State Fair on Friday.

Schneider says those driving cars should give big trucks room to change lanes, turn and enter freeways — especially when traffic is heavy. They should not make sudden lane changes or stops with trucks just behind them. And they should remember it takes trucks more time and space to stop.

About 10,000 Illinois crashes in 2011 involved trucks, about 4 percent of 280,000 total accidents.
