Coast Guard saves 9 on sinking boat near Chicago

CHICAGO – A Chicago-based Coast Guard crew rescued nine people from a sinking vessel on Lake Michigan late Sunday.

A 33-foot boat started taking on water after apparently striking a shoal about a mile from the Calumet Harbor breakwall near Chicago. The people aboard called for help on their marine radio.

A Coast Guard crew aboard a 45-foot boat responded and moved the people off the distressed boat, which then partially sank with about six feet of the bow above the waterline.

The Coast Guard says the boat had about 80 gallons of fuel aboard, but there are no signs of pollution. The Coast Guard monitored the situation overnight and the vessel was salvaged early Monday.

The rescued boaters' names are not being released by the Coast Guard.
