Legislation support

To the Editor:

The Farm Bill’s largest title is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Because of the serious nature of this funding, it has traditionally had bipartisan support.

In June, the Senate cut from it over $4 million. In July, the House removed nutrition assistance from it entirely without another program in place to meet the need. These
cuts are dangerous changes for children, poor seniors, the disabled and unemployed.

In June, Pope Francis said, “It is a well-known fact that current levels of production are sufficient, yet millions of people are still suffering and dying of starvation. ... This is
truly scandalous. A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth ... above all to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being.”

Another issue that we need to bring before our representatives is immigration reform.

The U.S. Senate passed immigration reform legislation with bipartisan support. The House also is considering this issue.

Congress will be making decisions soon. Please contact your representatives in Washington, asking them to support Americans here at home. The existing Farm Bill is under an extension that expires Sept. 30, so they need to hear from us now.

The federal fiscal year for 2014 begins Oct. 1. Please contact your representatives now while they are on recess so that when they return to Washington, they will know that you want bipartisan support for this important legislation.
