McHenry annexes property for church

McHENRY – A McHenry church received approval to make a vacant farm off South Crystal Lake Road its new home.

The McHenry City Council annexed the 12 acres, located at 414 S. Crystal Lake Road, and on Monday evening approved a conditional-use permit that will allow assembly use.

“I feel really confident that that’s an ideal location and that they will be good neighbors,” Alderwoman Geri Condon said.

The Chapel, a nondenominational church that currently holds services at McHenry West High School, has been raising money to buy the land since May 2012, its campus pastor, Jeff Pittman, said in a letter to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Once the purchase is complete, the church plans to launch a second campaign to raise money to build a church, an effort that most likely would take several years, Pittman continued.

The Chapel expects to close on the property in September, Executive Pastor Rick Egbert told the commission.

The Chapel will demolish five of the six buildings at the site, according to the annexation agreement. It plans to move the green pole barn behind the to-be-built church.

The church would be about 25,000 square feet and could accommodate 400 people, according to council documents. It would be built on the south side of the lot, on the far side of the property from the single-family homes.

The plan includes a parking lot with 225 parking spaces, more than the 100 spaces required by city ordinance.

To accommodate the increased traffic, The Chapel would be required to widen Crystal Lake Road, adding southbound and northbound turn lanes into the property.

Under the annexation agreement, The Chapel also will contribute $10,000 to the future installation of a traffic signal.
