Never forget

To the Editor:

Re: “McHenry keeps the Spirit of ’45 alive” by Joseph Bustos (Northwest Herald, Aug. 12).

I’m sorry I don’t have all the names from your newspaper. I have Joseph Bustos and Ron Bykowski from the VFW. There were so many more there who made my Dad’s day. To see his name and picture was beyond words. Just the mention of his name brought him joy.

When his name was called as a Navy World War II Veteran and POW for four years, I could see a smile. Because my father can’t get up from a sitting position without help, he had to stay sitting. I got up and pointed him out. When I sat down, he held my hand like he used to when I was a little girl.

He is a 93-year-old veteran who will be 94 on Dec. 7. He wanted to go up to the statue of the nurse and sailor and just touch it. I have pictures of him from last year doing the same thing.

I can’t thank you enough for your kindness. This is something I will never forget.
