Vandalism closes Fox Lake skate park

FOX LAKE – The skate park will be closed until spring because of a bombardment of vandalism.

Every single piece of equipment in the skate park, which is in Veterans Park, 301 S. Route 59, was spray-painted with "very vulgar" phrases directed at the Fox Lake Police Department late last week, Lt. Mark Schindler said.

Because the skate park is very visible, the public works department removed all of the ramps and other obstacles and put them into storage until its employees have time to clean and repaint them, Schindler said.

The concrete pad also was vandalized, but the village was able to powerwash it and remove the spray paint.

The park has been vandalized in the past, Schindler said, but it was gang-related tags and more localized.

This vandalism did not include any gang references, he said.

The closure is not designed to punish park users, Schindler said. The public works department is involved with a lot of projects right now and doesn't have the man-hours to devote to cleaning up the equipment.
