Man convicted in southern Ill. deaths of 2 campers

CARMI, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois man faces more than 50 years in prison after being convicted of killing two people while they were on a camping and fishing trip.

Thirty-seven-year-old Danny Coston pleaded guilty and then was convicted by a judge during a bench trial on Monday in White County. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and a single count of sexual assault for the deaths of 22-year-old Jacob Wheeler and 17-year-old Jessica Evans.

The Carmi man will be sentenced Sept. 17.

Authorities say a Wheeler and Evans were camping and fishing along the Little Wabash River last year when they were reported missing after they didn't return home. Searchers found Evans' body the next day, and Wheeler's body was discovered later.
