CHICAGO (AP) — A group of high school sports associations say student sports participation is up for the 24th consecutive year.
The National Federation of State High School Associations conducts a survey each year of all states and the District of Columbia. According to the results, there were more than 7.7 million high school participants in sports during the 2012-2013 school year. That's more than ever before. Official say the actual number of students may be lower because one student may play several sports.
Illinois kept its ranking as the state with the fourth highest sports participation, more than 330,000 participants. The state came after Texas, California and New York.
The federation has been compiling statistics since 1971.
