Company invests $2 million in CL facility

CRYSTAL LAKE – For 45 years, Camfil USA has been producing award-winning filtration and clean air systems in Crystal Lake.

After the company’s latest investment, city officials hope the fruitful partnership lasts at least another 45 years.

The Crystal Lake City Council and Economic Development Committee presented Camfil with a community investment award after the company invested nearly $2 million in upgrading the energy-efficiency of its building at 500 S. Main St.

James Richter II, assistant director of economic development for Crystal Lake, said Camfil’s investment was another example of the company’s commitment to the city and remaining a desired destination for employees.

“They have been a long-standing member of the community in a highly visible building,” Richter said. “They were contemplating several years back when they were doing a feasibility study whether to stay or take their facility and jobs elsewhere. It was very important for us to do all we could to make them stay.”

The city assisted Camfil with the project by expediting the permit and inspection process so company officials could make the upgrades they desperately needed.

Russ DeMayo, an engineering manager at Camfil, said the facility went years without upgrades and needed insulation improvements throughout. DeMayo said the major renovations included replacing “penny glass” windows that had no insulation, installing sculptured brick walls and constructing a new roof.

He said the decision to stay was easy because of the city’s help and the employees the company wanted to maintain.

“I think basically since we’ve been here we’ve been able to build a great foundation of employees that have flocked to the area over the years,” DeMayo said. “We have a commitment to those employees and making this a sustainable work environment.”

The company also made safety and aesthetic enhancements and a significant paved-surface upgrade to improve access for logistics.

The Crystal Lake location is one of 23 production or distribution centers across four countries for Camfil USA. The company is headquartered in Sweden and has about 3,500 employees and annual sales of $760 million.

There are 65 employees at the Crystal Lake location.
