McHenry library program to focus on fall bulbs
“Fall Bulbs for Spring Flowers” will be presented from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McHenry Public Library, 809 Front St.
The program, for those 18 and older, will focus on selecting, planting and caring for spring bulbs. Participants will learn about a number of bulbs, from old favorites to some of the less well-known bulbs.

Georgia Rae Family Band to perform
The Georgia Rae Family Band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in The Listening Room at Lakeside Legacy Arts Park, 401 Country Club Road, Crystal Lake.
The band will play a mix of folk, bluegrass and contemporary hits.

Diesel, Urban star in ‘Riddick’
“Riddick,” starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff, opens in theaters.
Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick’s past.
The movie is rated R for strong violence, language and some sexual content/nudity.
‘Salinger’ tells tale about reclusive author
“Salinger,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Judd Apatow and John Cusack, opens in theaters.
The film offers an unprecedented look inside the private world of J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of “The Catcher in the Rye.”
The movie is rated PG-13 for disturbing war images, thematic elements and smoking.
First Friday art show to feature portraits
A free First Friday Art Show at Lakeside Legacy Foundation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dole Mansion and Arts Park is at 401 Country Club Road in Crystal Lake.
Attendees can view art, mingle with the artists, listen to music, and explore the Dole Mansion, all while enjoying light appetizers and a cash bar.
The Sept. 6 exhibit is “Visage: Out of the Ordinary Portraits.” It is a showcase of 14 artists and features artistic mediums including photography, mixed media, sculpture and oils.

Chicago tribute band 25 or 6 to 4 will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake.

Marengo-Union Library to show ‘42’
A Saturday Matinee event will feature the 2013 biopic “42” at the Marengo-Union Library, 200 S. State St., Marengo.
The film, which will be shown at 2 p.m., stars Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. This is the story of how Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball since the racial barrier was put into place in the late 19th century.
Movie snacks will be served. No registration is required.
Half Marathon planned in Crystal Lake
The 17th annual Half Marathon will be at 8 a.m. Sunday at Lippold Park, west of Route 14 on Route 176, Crystal Lake.
This is a competitive race on a USATF-certified course through Lippold Park, Crystal Lake and Lakewood. The event is hosted by the Crystal Lake Park District.
Registration fees are $37, $40, $47 or $50, depending on registration date and CARA membership. Race-day registration will be accepted.

The Lakemoor Dollars For Scholars Annual Car & Truck Show will be at 8 a.m. Sunday at Morrison Park on Route 120, Lakemoor.
This is a fundraiser for Lakemoor High School students featuring a silent auction, prize raffle, food, trophies and more.
