CRYSTAL LAKE – Centegra Health System is integrating its cancer rehabilitation services.
The Crystal Lake-based health system recently became certified under the Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation, or STAR program. The program gives hospitals and other healthcare providers the tools needed to deliver evidence-based “best practices” cancer rehab services to patients.
STAR Program certification qualifies facilities to offer services to survivors who suffer from debilitating side effects caused by cancer treatments.
To receive its certification, Centegra Health System executed Oncology Rehab Partners’ STAR Program, implementing its evaluation and treatment protocols and rehabilitation training. These services will be offered to patients by medical staff members specially trained to work with survivors of all forms of cancer.
Specialty caregivers from a pool of disciplines – including physicians, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dieticians, mental health professionals and nurses – will work together with each patient on a personalized rehabilitation plan to increase strength and energy, alleviate pain and improve daily function and quality of life.
“The moment a person is diagnosed with cancer, he or she becomes a cancer survivor,” said Dr. Terrence Bugno, an independent radiation oncologist with Centegra Health System. “The STAR Program will help patients benefit from increased strength and energy so they can thrive as cancer survivors.”
