Route 176 near the intersection of Route 31 in Crystal Lake has reopened following a gas leak.

Route 176 was closed in both directions from Smith Road to Route 31 after construction crews struck a gas line in that area. Crews from Nicor were called to shut down the gas main.

There was a heavy gas smell coming from the area, and as a precautionary measure, residents along Route 176 were evacuted from their homes.

Traffic is still moving slowly near the intersection.

The road was closed for more than an hour.
