Schools closing early as Illinois sizzles

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Another day of high heat is sending kids from schools across central Illinois home early.

At least a dozen central Illinois school districts have decided that students will go home early on Tuesday.

In some cases whole districts such as the public schools in Decatur are shutting down early. Decatur schools will dismiss early Wednesday and Thursday, too.

University of Illinois Assistant Housing Director Kirsten Ruby says many of the school's dorm rooms aren't air conditioned. But she says common areas in those buildings are.

Forecasters say a hot and humid air mass will push the mercury into the mid-90s on Tuesday. But the heat index will make it feel like it's in the triple digits — particularly in the afternoon.

Relief isn't expected for days.
