Our View: Are you ready for high school football?

It happens every year, but it never gets old.

Friday night, high school football begins.

There’s the anticipation all day. Then, the final preparations and nerves.

And by 7 p.m., many of you will be in your seats and ready.

Football has been getting a bad name lately. This week, our sports department even took a look at what life would be like without high school football. The details ran in our high school football preview section, which was in Wednesday’s newspaper and is available at McHenryCountySports.com.

Tonight, we will be pleased to escape reality. Because nowhere else in our community do we get the same experience of gathering together, rooting for one goal, and enjoying nine consecutive Friday nights together.

For the lucky few whose team makes the playoffs, it will go on even longer.

For those who aren’t connected to a local high school, go out and see for yourself. Early in the season, the weather will be nice. The atmosphere will be better.

There’s really nothing, in high school sports, that compares.

Whether your team wins or loses, it’s an experience. One that you’ll remember, and they’ll remember.

So pack up the kids. Bring a few extra bucks for hot dogs and hamburgers, because the proceeds generally go directly back to supporting student activities, and be ready to cheer.

It’s Friday night football time again.
