Reduce tax burden
To the Editor:
Illinois is the leader of the pack in the U.S. when it comes to units of governments. Illinois has 7,000 units of governments, 2,100 more than any other state. The tax burden of 7,000 governments comes at a cost of billions for salaries, health care and, of course, those outrageous pensions. What an outrage.
One way and probably the only way to shrink government would be to get voters involved at the ballot box.
Last spring, the Chicago Tribune wrote an editorial titled “Seven ways to shrink government.” Start with the townships. Illinois has 1,432 tax-supported townships. This is more than any other state in the country. Townships are no longer useful.
Contact your state legislators and ask them to support a township referendum. Fewer governments reduce the tax burden.
