Sad necessity

To the Editor:

I wish to compliment Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson for her wonderfully written column, “What the butler saw, and what all of us also need to see,” on Aug. 24.

She references the recent movie “The Butler” in her admonishment of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, gutting the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

As with the court’s previous ruling with regard to Citizens United, giving corporations the unfettered right to spend as they see fit on our elections, Carlson does a spot-on job of reminding all of us that, especially in the Southern states, that the 1965 Voting Rights Act is a sad necessity to ensure that all Americans have the same voting rights.
