HIGHLAND PARK – A veteran from suburban Chicago has received four military medals decades after his service in World War II.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin presented the medals to Irving Distelheim on Thursday in Highland Park. Distelheim joined the Army in 1943 after he graduated from medical school. He cared for troops in France and was promoted to commanding officer of a medical detachment. At one time he was in charge of medical care for a prison of 80,000 captured German soldiers. Distelheim realized last year he hadn’t received the medals. He contacted Durbin’s office and the senator’s staff worked with him on the necessary paperwork.
