ROBINSON – A prison officer searching for a fugitive inmate in eastern Illinois was beaten by a man believed to be the prisoner who walked away from a work crew earlier in the day.

The Illinois Department of Corrections said the man surprised the officer, struck him from behind and fled. The officer was bruised.

Jared Carter walked away around 11 a.m. Friday from a crew that was cutting grass on the grounds of the Robinson Correctional Center. The crew was supervised and working outside the walls of the minimum security prison, about 110 miles southeast of Champaign near the Indiana border.

Carter was serving time on burglary convictions.

Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer says law enforcement personnel were continuing the search Saturday on foot, by air and with dogs.
