Suspect in mom’s slaying was under investigation

WHEATON – Prosecutors said a Downers Grove man accused of shooting his mother to death in a church parking lot was already under investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Zaky Bassaly of Downers Grove is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Yvonne Zaky Bassaly.

Police on Thursday found her body in a car parked outside a Coptic church they attended in Burr Ridge.

Bassaly, an Egyptian national, was ordered held without bond Friday and forced to hand over his Egyptian passport.

A church member told the local newspaper that Bassaly was involved in helping Coptic Egyptians with asylum paperwork.

But Assistant State’s Attorney Anne Therieau said Homeland Security was investigating Bassaly on suspicion of filing more than 100 fake asylum applications.
