Centennial celebration events

Crystal Lake was incorporated as a city in 1914, and the kickoff to a yearlong 100th birthday celebration starts Sunday with the Centennial Kick-Off Festival.

What has been scheduled follows. Dates, times and locations might change. More events could be added.

2013

Sept. 20, 4 to 11 p.m.

Centennial Kick-Off Festival, at Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Northwest Highway. Performers will be at the Main Stage at 4 and 7:30 p.m., and hot-air balloon rides will be held, weather permitting, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Sept. 21, noon to 11 p.m.

Centennial Kick-Off Festival, at Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Northwest Highway. Acts will be at the main stage at noon, and at 1, 3:30, 5:50 and 7:30 p.m. Other events include a magician and stilt walker from noon to 6 p.m. in the beach area, kite-flying demonstrations from 1:30 to 6 p.m., and fireworks at sunset.

Sept. 22, noon to 6 p.m.

Centennial Kick-Off-Festival, at Three Oaks Recreation Area, 5517 Northwest Highway. Acts will be at the Main Stage at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Other events include a magician and stilt walker and a comedy juggler in the beach area from noon to 6 p.m.

Oct. 13, 1 to 2 p.m.

Speaker Series – History of Crystal Lake, at City Hall. Crystal Lake Historical Society President Diana Kenney will start the speaker series out with a PowerPoint presentation on the history of Crystal Lake. With more than 100 images to share, she will trace the community’s history, covering topics such as early settlers, churches, schools, military and government.

Nov. 10, 1 to 2 p.m.

Speaker Series – Swedenberg, at City Hall. Local genealogist and historian Ann Wells will present a program entitled, “Swedenberg – a Community Within a Community.” Learn about Crystal Lake’s large Swedish population.

• Nov. 29, 7 p.m. — Festival of Lights Parade

• Nov. 29 to Dec. 23 — Santa’s House Open. Hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays; noon to 3 p.m. Sundays

• Dec. 1, 9 a.m. — Kiwanis Santa Run

• Dec. 5, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Christmas at the Dole

• Dec. 6, 5 to 8 p.m. — First Friday at the Dole – Winter Reflections

• Dec. 7, 9 a.m. — Breakfast with Santa

• Dec. 8, 1 to 2 p.m. — Speaker series – 100 years of the Fire Department, at City Hall, presented by Chris Williams

• Dec. 15, noon to 4:30 p.m. — Palmer House Victorian Tea

2014

• Jan. 18 to 19 — Centennial/Chili Open, Crystal Lake Main Beach

• May 26, 11 a.m., Central High School to Union Cemetery — Memorial Day/Centennial Parade

• June 2014 — Downtown Train Station Centennial

• July 3 to 6 — Centennial Lakeside Festival, Lakeside Legacy Arts Park

• Sept. 26-28 — Centennial Johnny Appleseed Festival, in downtown Crystal Lake
