JOHNSBURG – A Johnsburg High School teacher was one of 16 teachers in the Chicago area recognized as a “Hero in the Classroom.”

Rick Bailey was nominated by his students and colleagues for the award, which is sponsored by Symetra Financial Corp., Gallagher Benefit Services and the Chicago Bears. Bailey teaches history, sociology and current events.

“Whenever you see Mr. B, he is running on full throttle, giving everything he has,” Jessica Bertulis, a former student, wrote in her nomination.

Bailey was recognized at a surprise ceremony last week. He will receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies, as well as tickets to Sunday’s Bears game against the Minnesota Vikings, where he also will be recognized.

Winners are selected based on their ability “to make a real difference in students’ lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills,” according to a news release.
