Coffee with the chief

To the Editor:

I have been attending coffee with the chief, hosted by Chief Jones of the McHenry Police Department for the past six months.

Chief Jones and other officers conduct a meeting open to the public on the second Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Each meeting has a different and interesting topic regarding their work.

I have found these meetings to be an honor to get to know some of our first responders and how important their work is. They take their job very seriously. I have discovered their training is never done. There is always new, better or faster ways to do their job. They are not happy until they have exceeded their goal.

Some topics they have covered are drugs in McHenry, the K-9 unit, the work of detectives, the new gun laws and safety at our schools. My only regret is I did not know about these meetings sooner.

I urge you to attend one or more of these meetings. I am sure you will find them very informative. It is comforting to know our police officers work so hard at maintaining and securing our safety.

You should also feel free to ask questions throughout the meeting. Ideas for topics for future meetings are welcome. And, of course, there is coffee and cookies.
