Man convicted of role in deadly Ill. home invasion

BELLEVILLE – A jury in southwestern Illinois found a man guilty of helping his cousin kill a woman during a home invasion that also injured the victim’s boyfriend.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported a St. Clair County jury deliberated 90 minutes Friday before convicting 22-year-old Garfield Fenton of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Authorities said 23-year-old LeNae Cole was fatally stabbed in the neck in July of last year in her Belleville apartment. Her boyfriend was stabbed but survived.

Cole had obtained a protection order, alleging her husband, John Cole, choked her and tied her to a chair. She filed for divorce the month before the killing.

John Cole, a cousin of Fenton’s, awaits trial on charges of murder and attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
