To the Editor:
Regarding Lakemoor’s proposed boat launch at the end of Old Bay Road in Johnsburg: the location is completely inappropriate. It is too small to accommodate the vehicles, boats and traffic that such a project would bring to the narrow roadway. It is ridiculous to put a public boat launch into an area of only private residences.
The Old Bay Road residents are unanimously and vehemently opposed to the whole project. Lakemoor residents already have access to the Chain O’ Lakes by way of the many boat launches in the area. Why do they need a boat launch in this very small space within 30 feet of Johnsburg residences?
Do Lakemoor residents want $250,000 of their tax dollars to go toward a project that only six vehicles can use at any one time? What about the environmental impact to the wetlands?
This project has been in the works for more than a year, and yet the residents, who will most be affected by it, as well as Johnsburg and McHenry County officials, just found out about it seven weeks ago. In addition, the Lakemoor Village Board chose to discuss the details of the boat launch in executive session instead of during the public portion of its Aug. 2 meeting. What’s the big secret?
Lakemoor’s “goal is to create a balance between” Old Bay Road residents “concerns” and Lakemoor’s “programming needs.” There can be no balance in this situation. Putting a boat launch or public park on Old Bay Road is senseless and ill-conceived.
