Health department schedules flu shot clinics

Published: Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 11:20 p.m. CDT

WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Department of Health joins the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in encouraging an annual flu shot for everyone ages 6 months and older as the best protection against influenza.

Appointments for mercury-free shots for adults and children ages 9 years and older can be made by calling 815-334-4510 (for all clinics) or by visiting

The cost is $30. Medicaid and Medicare Part B are accepted.

Health department flu clinics have been scheduled in September and early October on the following dates:

• 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McHenry Township Office, 3703 N. Richmond Road, Johnsburg.

• 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Crystal Lake office of the health department, 100 N. Virginia St., Crystal Lake.

• 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the Woodstock office of the health department, 2200 N. Seminary Ave., Building A, Woodstock.

• Noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Algonquin Township Office, 3702 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

The CDC recommends getting a flu shot before flu season begins because it takes two weeks for antibodies to develop to provide protection.

A flu shot protects not only those who get them but also those around them, such as pregnant women, young children, people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease and people 65 and older who are especially at risk for complications from the flu.

Simple ways to protect oneself also include covering coughs, washing hands and staying home when sick.
