Don’t believe ‘reformers’

To the Editor:

NBC News will again be hosting “Education Nation” from Oct. 6-8.

The stated goal of the program is to seek to create a well-informed dialogue among the various stakeholders in pursuit of providing every American with an opportunity to achieve the best education in the world.

One of the show’s sponsors is the Gates Foundation, which has given millions of dollars to create private charter schools and to push for evaluating our public schools and teachers by the vaunted but now largely debunked standardized achievement test scores of students.

Although the list of presenters on the program includes a smattering of parents, professionals and supporters of public schools, the larger group includes those so-called education reformers whose ultimate goal is to smash the public schools and replace them with private charters, vouchers and virtuals.

You can be sure the proponents of privatizing our public schools will laud the success of their efforts, but the facts are that achievement results for most of these spin-offs have been dismal at best.

You can be just as sure they will tweak the truth to preserve their profits even at the expense of our nation’s most vulnerable – our children.
