SOUTH BARRINGTON – A Lake in the Hills man was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after his car collided nearly head-on with another vehicle Saturday in South Barrington.

The crash happened around 1:50 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Algonquin and Palatine roads, South Barrington police said.

Jeff Rubio, 42, of Lake in the Hills, was driving a 2010 Mazda headed west on Algonquin Road when eastbound driver Brianna Graffia, 16, of Inverness, attempted to turn her 2012 Jeep onto east Palatine Road. The two vehicles then collided, police said.

Rubio was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with critical injuries. It took emergency personnel about 30 minutes to extricate Rubio from his car.

Police were trying to determine the status of the traffic signal at the time of the collision. No one had been cited in the crash by Sunday afternoon.
