McHENRY – Portions of Route 120 and River Road remain closed after a nearly 11-hour natural gas leak that began Monday afternoon.
Construction workers struck a gas line just after 4 p.m. on Monday, the police department said. Westbound Route 120 at River Road is down to one lane, and northbound River Road is closed to local traffic only from North Chapel Hill Road to Lincoln Road.
The gas line was "leaking heavily," according to a McHenry Township Fire Protection District press release, and police and fire departments began evacuating nearby endangered occupancies.
Work on the gas line continued throughout the night and into Tuesday morning, and the leak was finally controlled at 2:50 a.m., the press release said.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
