Cary man gets 45 years for sex crimes

WOODSTOCK – A McHenry County judge handed down a 45-year sentence to a Cary man who admitted to engaging in or performing sex acts on children.

Michael Scott Reck, 39, could have been sentenced to three life sentences for sexual encounters with children in McHenry and Cook counties and in Wisconsin. Instead, he accepted a plea agreement Friday before McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather.

There were at leave five victims, both male and female, between the ages of 4 and 14, who either were related to or otherwise known to Reck.

The abuse happened over a six-month period starting in summer 2012, when the victims said Reck performed sex acts on them, fondled them, showed them pornography, or discussed sex with them, Assistant State's Attorney Sharyl Eisenstein said.

Reck was charged in January.

The abuse happened to one victim, Eisenstein said, after Reck was asked to become a fatherly figure to one of the boys.

"I feel it was a good resolution," Eisenstein said outside the courtroom. "He's getting a significant sentence. The children will at least be in their 40s when he's eligible for parole, and the kids won't have to come in to testify."

Some of the sex acts occurred at Reck's Cary home, at a home in Oak Park and at a hotel in Appleton, Wis. Charges were pending outside of McHenry County, but attorneys there agreed not to prosecute.

Reck pleaded guilty to four crimes, including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, two counts of criminal sexual assault, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Remaining charges were dropped. Three years of his sentence are day for day eligible, while he must serve 85 percent of the remaining 42 years. His sentence will be served consecutively.

"My hands were tied," Reck's defense attorney Henry Sugden said. "You can't try these cases, the laws are so draconian. If you don't get a complete not guilty, the defendant was facing natural life."

Reck will have to register for life as a sex offender.
