CRYSTAL LAKE – Those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer and who have considered genetic testing are encouraged to attend a fall support group meeting Monday.
A Chicago Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered Northwest fall meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Centegra Gavers Breast Center, 360 N. Terra Cotta Road, Crystal Lake.
Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered is a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. About 1 million Americans carry a BRCA or other gene mutation that puts them at high risk for these cancers. Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered provides lifesaving information, resources and support for families that may carry one of these cancer-causing genes.
The meeting’s speaker will be Centegra-registered dietitian and oncology nutrition specialist Lora Anderson. She will present “Diet Diversity: A Discussion About the Assortment of Foods that May Lower Risk in BRCA Positive Carriers.” She will review foods that may be beneficial to consume and foods to avoid to lower risk.
Also at the meeting will be Centegra’s certified genetic counselor Shelly Galasinski. She will be available to answer questions regarding medical management and genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome.
