Daughter sentenced to 50 years for mother's death

PEKIN — A central Illinois woman was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the beating death of her mother.

The Pekin Daily Times reports Gina Gonzalez was sentenced Thursday in Tazewell County Circuit Court.

The 45-year-old was convicted of first-degree murder this summer in the beating that left 70-year-old Quyen Thi Phan of Marquette Heights with massive brain injuries. Phan died in December 2011, four days after the mother and daughter had a fight.

Marquette Heights is just outside Peoria.

Prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence of 60 years in prison. During her trial, Gonzalez testified that her mother fell and that she never hit her.
