Athlete of the Week

Brett Covalt

Prairie Ridge, Junior

The Wolves quarterback rushed 24 times for 258 yards and four touchdowns as Prairie Ridge kept its playoff hopes alive with a 56-27 victory over Grayslake North.

Covalt ran for the Wolves’ first two touchdowns and keyed their option offense, which rushed for 575 yards. Covalt had 321 yards rushing in the first seven games.

The victory puts Prairie Ridge at 4-4 for the season, giving it back-to-back wins and putting it in position to return to the playoffs. The Wolves play at McHenry (2-6) on Friday and should have ample playoff points if they can reach five victories.

Long time coming: Dundee-Crown defeated McHenry, 49-21, to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1994. Running back Scott Benton, who played at Yale, was the Northwest Herald Player of the Year that season.

It had been even longer since the Chargers had beaten McHenry. The last time that happened was in 1989, when the Chargers won 14-6.

This Week’s Top Games

Huntley (4-4, 2-3) vs. Crystal Lake South (3-5, 1-4)

7:15 p.m. Friday, Ken Bruhn Field

• The Red Raiders need to win and hope they have enough playoff points to make it. South knows it’s not going to the postseason and will try to spoil Huntley’s chances.

Prairie Ridge (4-4, 2-3) vs. McHenry (2-6, 0-5)

7:15 p.m. Friday, McCracken Field

• Prairie Ridge has scored more points (98) in their last two games than the previous six (77). They need one more win to reach the playoffs.

Richmond-Burton (5-3, 3-2) vs. Harvard (8-0, 5-0)

• R-B needs a win because it may be short of playoff points to qualify with five victories. Harvard is trying to finish the season unbeaten for the first time since 1988 and already is guaranteed a share of the Big Northern Conference East Division title.

Dundee-Crown (6-2, 3-2) vs. Jacobs (6-2, 5-0)

7:15 p.m. Friday, Jacobs Athletic Field

• Jacobs can win the FVC Valley Division outright with a victory. D-C would like to beat its District 300 rival and improve its playoff seed.
