Richmond crash sends two to hospital

RICHMOND – Two people were taken to the hospital following a crash Thursday morning in Richmond.

Paul Michael Palesh, 66, of 2509 Freedom Drive, McHenry, was northbound on Route 12 when police said he ran a red light at the Route 173 intersection and hit a pickup truck pulling a fifth-wheel camper trailer westbound on Route 173, according to a news release from the Richmond Police Department.

The collision caused the pickup trick to veer into the parking lot of Papa Saverio's Restaurant, causing "significant damage" to the strip mall's sign, snapping a tree off at the base and toppling a parking lot light pole, according to a release from the Richmond Township Fire Protection District.

Palesh and the front-seat passenger of the pickup truck, Sandra Stewart of Cary, were transported to Centegra Hospital – McHenry. Their injuries were serious but not life threatening, the fire district said.

Palesh was cited for disregarding a traffic control device, the police said.
