Week 9 football preview capsules

Fox Valley Conference Fox Division

Crystal Lake Central (7-1, 5-0) at Johnsburg (1-7, 1-4)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Tigers: Central is ranked No. 7 in Class 6A by The Associated Press and can wrap up the FVC Fox title outright with a victory. QB Kyle Lavand has thrown for 1,852 yards (second in the area), and RB Ryan Williams (802 yards) is third among rushing leaders.

About the Skyhawks: This is Johnsburg’s last game in the FVC, as it will move to the Big Northern Conference East Division next year. QB Nick Brengman has thrown for 1,042 yards and nine touchdowns. WR Alec Graef leads the team with 24 receptions.

Grayslake Central (4-4, 2-3) at Woodstock (1-7, 1-4)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Rams: Grayslake Central, with 36 playoff points (opponents' wins), can make the playoffs with a victory and some help from its opponents. RB Malcolm Reed leads the offense with 606 rushing yards.

About the Blue Streaks: Woodstock WRs John Kruse (42 receptions) and Jordan Sumner (39) are in the area’s top five. QB Jace Polhman has thrown for 810 yards, but only started a few games.

Grayslake North (6-2, 4-1) at Woodstock North (1-7, 1-4)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday.

About the Knights: Grayslake North QB Merrick Gentile has rushed for 835 yards, and RB Titus Booker has run for 739. Prairie Ridge defeated the Knights, 56-27, last week.

About the Thunder: Woodstock North is led by RBs Jordan Plummer (680 rushing yards) and Grant Wade (459). The program is in its fifth year and made the playoffs each of the two previous seasons.

Fox Valley Conference Valley Division

Huntley (4-4, 2-3) at Crystal Lake South (3-5, 1-4)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Red Raiders: With five victories, Huntley may get enough points to make the playoffs. The Raiders figure they will be close to 40 points, which should make it. RB Mitch Kawell has 645 rushing yards, and QB Blake Jacobs has thrown for 1,229 yards.

About the Gators: South will miss the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. The Gators are led by RBs Chris Ivers (445 rushing yards) and Eric Landis (419). QB Austin Rogers also has been used at receiver in the past two games, and Payton Minogue has thrown three touchdown passes.

Prairie Ridge (4-4, 2-3) at McHenry (2-5, 0-5)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Wolves: Prairie Ridge has erupted for 98 points in its past two games and revived its playoff hopes. The Wolves will have ample points if they get a fifth victory. QB Brett Covalt ran for 258 yards last week and leads the team with 579 yards.

About the Warriors: McHenry started 2-1 but has lost five consecutive games. QB Mike Briscoe has thrown for 1,083 yards and nine touchdowns.

Dundee-Crown (6-2, 3-2) at Jacobs (6-2, 5-0)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Chargers: D-C defeated McHenry, 49-21, last week to assure a playoff spot for the first time since 1994. D-C scored on its first seven possessions of that game with RB Caleb Parson scoring four times. Parson leads the Chargers with 669 yards.

About the Golden Eagles: Jacobs will win the FVC Valley title, either shared or outright, for the first time since 1979. The Eagles are led by QB Bret Mooney, whose 1,606 passing yards are third in the area. WR Hunter Williams is second in the area with 47 catches.

Suburban Christian Conference

Marian Central (6-2, 4-2 Blue) at Wheaton Academy (4-4, 3-3 Gold)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

About the Hurricanes: Marian is tied for 10th in Class 5A. QB Billy Bahl has thrown for an area-best 2,135 yards and 23 touchdowns. Running back Ephraim Lee has 816 yards rushing for second in the area. Crossover games count in the SCC standings.

About the Warriors: Wheaton Academy has 38 playoff points, so with a fifth win it would make the playoffs. The Warriors have lost by 39, 38 and 56 points to other SCC Blue Division teams.

Big Northern Conference East Division

Richmond-Burton (5-3, 3-2) at Harvard (8-0, 5-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

About the Rockets: R-B has a balanced running game with RBs Brad Boelkow (632 rushing yards) and Vince Battaglia (519). Luke Brinkmann, their fastest player, will miss his second game with a lower body injury. He’s rushed for 459 yards. The Rockets might need a sixth win to make the playoffs, as their best total may be 37 playoff points.

About the Hornets: Harvard is ranked No. 8 in Class 4A and could wrap up its first unbeaten regular season since 1988. The Hornets also can win the BNC East outright for the first time since 2007. RBs Christian Kramer (637) and Jose Mejia (617) lead the offense.

Genoa-Kingston (4-4, 4-1) at Marengo (1-7, 1-4)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

About the Cogs: G-K lost to Harvard, 22-21, last week in a game that clinched a share of the BNC East title for the Hornets. The Cogs still could win a share with a victory and help from RIchmond-Burton.

About the Indians: Marengo defeated Rockford Christian, 42-7, last week to halt a 15-game losing streak. QB Zach Knobloch has thrown for 743 yards since taking over as starter. RB Coty Kissack has 427 rushing yards.

Northeastern Athletic Conference

Ottawa Marquette (8-0, 8-0) at Alden-Hebron (6-2, 6-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

About the Crusaders: Marquette is receiving votes in Class 2A and is just outside the top 10. The Crusaders have outscored their opponents, 361-56, for the season.

About the Giants: A-H is hosting a night game for the first time in school history. The school rented lights from a company in Rockford. RB Nate Peterson leads the Giants with 627 rushing yards. The Giants are going to the playoffs for the 10th time in 11 seasons.


Hampshire (6-2) at Cary-Grove (5-3)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday

About the Whip-Purs: Hampshire RB Nick Kielbasa leads the area with 1,136 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. WR Tim Jansen has been a big-play man with 29 receptions and 10 touchdowns.

About the Trojans: C-G’s defense has allowed more than 14 points only once in its past six games. FB Tyler Pennington is fourth in the area with 701 rushing yards and has played five games.
