Illinois Tollway could raise some limits to 70 mph

DOWNERS GROVE — The Illinois Tollway has taken a step toward raising the speed limit to 70 mph on three outlying sections of its network.

The agency's board of directors voted Thursday to approve an administrative rule change necessary for raising speed limits from 65 mph.

The change is in response to a new state law boosting the speed limit on rural interstates starting Jan. 1. Eight counties in the Chicago area are allowed to keep their limits lower.

Altogether, 85 miles of the 286-mile tollway system would see higher speeds.

Those segments are on the Jane Addams Memorial west of the I-39 interchange, the Reagan Memorial west of state route 47 and the Tri-State north of Stearns School Road in Lake County.

A legislative oversight committee still must approve the changes.
