CRYSTAL LAKE – North Wall Rock Climbing Gym owner Randy Spencer hosted a 90th birthday party climb for his father, Edward Spencer, earlier this month at the business, 824 S. Main St., Suite 106, Crystal Lake.

Edward Spencer celebrated his 90th birthday by climbing a 50-foot wall at the gym he helped his son build surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who came from around the country to wish him well.

Randy Spencer started the business 20 years ago on a whim. He called his father, a former tool and die maker, for help building the gym.

North Wall Rock Climbing Gym has more than 50 climbing routes with more than 300 problems changed weekly and added daily. It also has a large cave that includes upper and lower secondary cave rooms.

The gym offers classes, lessons, private parties, birthdays and other events.
