Detour: Johnsburg Road open to two-way traffic

As road construction season winds down, let’s go over the wrapping up of two projects and the start of two others:

• JOHNSBURG ROAD: Johnsburg Road has been reopened to two-way traffic between Route 31 and Chapel Hill Road. Construction work is expected to continue along the road through the month, and road signal installation is continuing, so expect occasional daytime lane closures and observe posted construction speed limits.

• PARK AND RIDE: McHenry County’s first park-and-ride lot opened at Route 31 and Virginia Road in Lake in the Hills. The 105-space lot, which includes a bike rack, gives carpooling residents a place to meet and park rather than using parking lots for shopping centers and other locations.

• PRAIRIE GROVE: Delays are possible along a 500-foot stretch of Barreville Road south of Arbor Lane as workers grind down old asphalt and lay down new pavement.

• ROUTES 31 AND 120: There could be some scattered lane closures through the winter as utility companies place equipment ahead of construction to start in the spring. The project to start next year will widen both roads and place new traffic signals.

• 2040 LONG-RANGE PLAN: McHenry County is holding six public hearings through November over its proposed plan for major road and mass-transit improvements through 2040. You can find the dates and read the plan at www.2040mchenrycountyplan.org.

• ROUTE 14 IN CRYSTAL LAKE: Expect intermittent lane closures during daylight hours over the next several weeks as workers reinstall decorative street light arms along Route 14 between Carpenter Street and Coventry Lane.

• ALGONQUIN WESTERN BYPASS: Watch for workers and delays as workers continue a $33 million project to build a 2-mile, four-lane highway west of downtown Algonquin to relieve congestion on Route 31.

• I-90 INTERCHANGE: Work is expected to wrap up by the end of the year to convert the Interstate 90 and Route 47 intersection to a full interchange.

• ROUTES 31 AND 176: Work is still ongoing to improve the intersection of Routes 31 and 176. Traffic during peak travel times is slow going.
