Get ready for cyclocross

Published: Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

Cyclocross is the fastest growing discipline within the wonderful world of bicycling, and it will make an appearance in Woodstock’s Emricson Park on Sunday.

Often called “cross,” it takes place mostly on grass, but barriers requiring dismounting and remounting the bike are required each lap. Of course, if mud is available, course designers might wish to add that to the fun. Since Emricson has a couple of sand volleyball courts, we might be riding through them as well. Many say that cyclocross is akin to steeplechase with bikes in place of horses.

Spectators are quite welcome, and friendly heckling is fine. Cowbells and even vuvuzelas may be present, just not right in our ears, please. There are usually 600-plus racers in various age groups and categories, with the first race of the day at 8:45 a.m. and final race at 3:30 p.m.

More details can be found at Please stop by, and bring your cowbell
