Jury picked for Ohio man who shot wife in hospital

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A jury has been chosen for the trial of an Ohio man charged with fatally shooting his wife in a hospital intensive care unit.

Seven men and five women will hear opening statements Monday afternoon at the Akron trial of 68-year-old John Wise, of Massillon (MAS'-ih-lawn).

His defense plans to argue he was a loving husband and was insane when he shot his wife last year as she lay debilitated in a hospital bed, unable to speak.

He could face life in prison if convicted.

Friends called it a mercy killing, but that's not a legal defense in Ohio. A longtime friend of the couple says the two agreed they didn't want to live out their years bedridden and disabled.

Prosecutors declined to discuss the case before trial.
