WILLISTON, N.D. — A Chicago-area man wanted for questioning in the suspicious deaths of his wife and mother has been arrested in North Dakota after allegedly trying to rob a church at gunpoint during Mass.
Antioch, Ill., Police Chief Craig Somerville says 54-year-old Billy Varner was arrested Saturday. He says no one was hurt in the robbery attempt, and parishioners chased the suspect when he fled the church.
Authorities arrested Varner without incident shortly after on a car theft warrant out of Illinois. He wasn't immediately charged in the robbery attempt.
Illinois authorities have traveled to North Dakota to question Varner about the deaths of 61-year-old Peggy Henderson and 82-year-old Dorothy Varner. They were discovered dead Oct. 28 in an apartment they shared with Billy Varner. Police haven't said how they died.
