McHenry County Economic Development Corp. Business Champion Award winners announced

CRYSTAL LAKE – The McHenry County Economic Development Corp. announced the 2013 Business Champion Award winners Tuesday at the MCEDC Annual Dinner.

More than 400 business leaders attended the event, which culminates with the Business Champion Award presentations

For the past six years, MCEDC has recognized companies that have positively contributed to McHenry County’s economy and exhibited business acumen and vision. Judging is conducted by a panel of nine independent and unbiased business leaders residing outside McHenry County.

Phoenix Woodworking in Woodstock was selected in the division for fewer than 25 employees. Faced with the many challenges of the recent recession, Phoenix worked to keep everyone employed by reducing hours and using downtime to provide training and build on certifications. President Sandra Pierce accepted the award.

In the mid-size company category of 25 to 100 employees, Advanced Flexible Components in Lake in the Hills was the winner. The company is family-owned and has been in business in McHenry County for more than 25 years. It has had double-digit growth and grown into a multisite facility. President Bill Lewis accepted the award.

Watlow of Richmond was the winner in the category 100 to 299 employees. The company was nominated by an employee who began as a temporary employee in 1993 and wanted to recognize the tremendous employee support and training this company provides. Nathan Frost, director of operations, accepted the award on behalf of the entire team.

In the category of over 300 employees, engineering manager Karl Schult accepted the award for Covidien of Crystal Lake. The company has invested more than $17 million in capital over the past four years, developed an initiative which prevented more than 6 million pounds of scrap from entering landfills, relocated a subsidiary from Texas to Crystal Lake, increased employment by about 100 jobs, and developed a new intern program with a local high school.
