McHENRY – An Old-Fashioned Christmas in downtown McHenry has expanded to two days this year.

On Saturday, area residents can start shopping early at stores in the downtown area. Many will be having specials and holiday events throughout the day.

From 1 to 5 p.m., they can enjoy the “Taste of Christmas Downtown.” Many of the downtown restaurants will offer a taste of their holiday specialty for a small fee.

A complimentary trolley will go through the downtown area beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees should be sure to arrive at Veterans Park at 4:30 p.m., as Santa Claus will be there at 4:30 p.m. to visit with children in the gazebo before the traditional city tree-lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

Professional photographer Chris Szubinski from Ccreative Images Photography will be on hand to take photos of families.

On Sunday is the classic event many look forward to. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., all participating stores will be open for holiday shopping. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., all three downtown streets – Main Street, Green Street and Riverside Drive – will have events such as pony rides, a Harms Farm snowball train ride, a horse-pulled wagon ride, a complimentary trolley, costumed characters strolling up and down the streets, carolers and more.

The event is put on by the McHenry Area Downtown Business Association.
